Chapter 20

It had been hours since his chopped conversation with his father, and all Marcus had energy for was to shoot a few hoops. Marcus had hated sharing such an intimate detail with Pops, but he knew his father would keep his secret, as well as point him in the right direction. Besides, he was too embarrassed to share his shortcomings with anyone else but his father. Telling Ky, Marcus knew, would taint his image and the respect that the young man held for him.

Pops was right. It had been a while since he’d shared with Marcus the mistake he had made himself, causing his once happy marriage to die. Mentally, Marcus had tried to block out the past as well, but now, because of his own betrayal, life was way too vivid—even the past he had pushed to the back of his own mind.

Shooting baskets, perfecting his lay-up and even having a one-man dunking contest, Marcus allowed his aggression to be placed on the hard dribble of his Spalding basketball. With the fall’s sun and the wind on his back, thoughts of his betrayal and even the betrayal of his father entered his mind. Marcus couldn’t care less about the sweat that broke out down his face. Hoping it meshed with the tears of internal pain that bled through, Marcus used all of the energy he had to try to bury his past.

It seemed as though his parents had argued ever since he could remember. Being young and not knowing there could be rules in a marriage, Marcus told his dad one night about having been approached by a strange woman who was asking questions about their family. The arguing between his parents intensified. It seemed that his mother had been listening in on the conversation that was only meant for his dad. Because of him, or so he thought, all that had been buried seemed to have resurfaced and landed on his young, weak shoulders.

“I haven’t fooled around with anyone, honey.” Marcus’s dad had tried his best to calm down his wife. “I don’t know what lady Marcus is talking about,” he tried to argue.

“You know dang-on well who he’s talking about—that floozy you had the fling with, the affair, whatever you want to call it.” Out of disgust, Marcus’s petite but feisty mother swung her arms in the air, allowing them to fall and slap her full-figured hips.

“Baby.” Her weary-eyed husband sighed as he tried to comfort his wife.

Peeping through the keyhole in his parents’ door, Marcus would never forget the look on his father’s face or the stained tears on his mother’s caramel-colored cheeks.

“Don’t baby me! I thought you were through,” she beat into the older Jeffries’ ear as she backed herself into the corner by their shared closet, daring him to come closer. “You said that was over years ago. I believed you.”

Mrs. Jeffries tilted her head as if she wanted her nightmare to remain in her dreams. Pushing into his chest, breaking their closeness, Shirl Jeffries wanted to be finished with their marriage.
